my mouth’s too dry to rage
Yesterday, I only had to curl the early game. The early league is sort of a mishmash, it’s supposed to be a beginner’s league and so I joined with the interest of helping new people learn how to curl. Unfortunately for me, I got stuck on a team full of people who already know how to curl.
Anyway, our normal skip hasn’t been there the past two times and for some reason or another, I have been filling in as skip. This would normally be fine, except my third is an older lady who…she…in the words of Johnny Cash “make me want to Grab my sub machine”. She harps on me, refuses to listen to my calls for sweeping or not etc etc. I don’t pretend to be the most knowledgeable skip there, but she won’t say anything when I ask her opinion on a shot, and then proceed to detail everything wrong with it AFTER I throw the stone. Oh and here’s the clincher, anytime I ask anything, her opinion, what her thought is on the rock that she isn’t sweeping, etc etc, the response is always “Oh I don’t know, You’re the skip.” It’s really frustrating and there’s not much I can do. I mean, I’m there to have fun, but I’d also very much like to win, unfortunately, she quits on me far too often for that to happen. Yesterday, she actually said “at least one of the skips wants to win” referring to the other guy. Like seriously, how do I tell an older lady to shut up and curl or get off the ice? I’ve offered to let her skip, she doesn’t want to, it seems she prefers harping at me from afar, less accountability that way. If I snap at an old lady, will you still respect me?
Anyway, that’s my rant. It’s easy to laugh off, because apparently she’s famous for this in the club. It throws me off my game, getting angry at her antics, so there’s that too.
I had a great shot yesterday and then she just didn’t call the line at all. I feel that if this continues, I’ll be forced to say something.
On Monday was the going away dinner for one of my co-workers, she’s leaving the province and moving to New Jersey. Her husband accepted a position with a big pharmaceutical company down there. Anyway, she was talking about the hoops that you have to jump through for work visas and so on in order to work in the States. It seemed important because I just signed up for updates on job openings in the NHL, specifically for IT.
Also as part of the dinner, we were talking about the March of the Penguins and someone made the comment that it’s rare that a father has such a huge role in raising the child in the animal world. I casually mentioned, well except for sea horses…
Needless to say, I then had to explain the whole sea horse thing, with the father taking the eggs and incubating them and actually giving birth to the live babies etc. Everyone was a little confused on why I knew that. I couldn’t really explain that. BUT the sloth is the only mammal that is green in color.
