wide awake asleep
When I was younger, not sure when exactly, certainly when I lived in Chester and probably when I was still in elementary, so like Grade 4 or 5, my school class saw a presentation, some sort of career day thing. I can’t recall the exact details of the presentation, nor even what the job we were being showcased was. I just remember walking out of the presentation, talking about it with my friends and one of them making the observation: “now everyone wants to be a marine biologist/astronaut/basket-weaver/whatever the job was.”
At the time, I’m pretty sure I had no idea what the word astute meant and certainly didn’t know how much it applied to that observation. I just remember feeling a little deflated because walking out of the presentation, I did want to be a marine biologist/astronaut/basket-weaver/whatever. My classmates and I were all impressionable youngsters and clearly the presentation was effective enough to convince the majority of us to think that we wanted that job (though clearly it wasn’t effective enough to make a long-term impression, even so much as what the job in question actually was).
Anyway, after a week in Regina, that story has come to mind.
